The Professional Standards and Development Committee is organising an overview workshop on “Forensic Document and Handwriting Examination”.  Details are as follows:

Date:           19 Feb 2011 (Saturday)
Time:          2:00 pm to 6:45 pm
Venue:        Bar Council Auditorium
Speaker:     Paul Westwood

Paul Westwood, Principal Forensics Examiner, Forensic Document Services Pty Ltd, is a former Director of the Document Examination Laboratories of the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Department of Immigration.  He established private document laboratories in Canberra and Sydney and has field equipment located in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Paul holds the degree of Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma in Document Examination from the Forensic Science Society of the United Kingdom.  He has worked extensively for governmental departments, banking and financial institutions, and law firms throughout Australia and overseas.

Paul was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1982 for services in the field of document examination whilst he was a member of the Australian Federal Police.  He was also awarded the National Medal in 1984 in respect of police service.  In addition, he is a corresponding member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners.  Paul has extensive court experience throughout Australia and overseas spanning a period in excess of 30 years.

  • Detection of unauthorised or fraudulent alterations of documents, including page substitutions;
  • Restoration of erased, leached, faded, obscured or obliterated entries on documents;
  • Determining the relative date on which entries are written;
  • Examination of typewritten and computer-generated documents;
  • Chemical analysis of inks and papers; and
  • Forensic computer examination.
