The Advocacy Training Course (“ATC”) will be held on 22 and 23 Jan 2011 and is designed to teach the basics of advocacy, utilising the Hampel method of advocacy teaching.1 The ATC is jointly organised by the Bar Council Professional Standards & Development Committee, Lincoln’s Inn Alumni Association of Malaysia and the Malaysian Inner Temple Alumni Association.
The Hampel teaching method requires participants to perform as advocates in a simulated courtroom environment under the guidance of experienced and trained practitioners who will observe their performance and offer guidance. Participants will be divided into groups of six persons and will be trained by at least two trainers in each group. The trainers for the ATC include practitioners from the Malaysian Bar such as Robert Lazar, Christopher Leong, Sitpah Selvaratnam, Gopal Sreenevasan, Ravindran Nekoo, Dhinesh Baskaran, Ariff Rozhan and Siva Kumar Kanagasabai. The ATC is best suited to teaching advocacy to lawyers in their first to third years of practice, as it aims to identify and correct basic mistakes in advocacy and to offer guidance to new practitioners on the correct way to present themselves and their arguments in a courtroom. Members are encouraged to register for, and attend, the ATC. The participation fee is RM500 per person. The ATC will be conducted at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex at Jalan Duta.
Given the nature of the teaching method employed, the ATC is open to only 30 participants for the January course. Places will be given on a first-come, first-served basis but Members are encouraged to register their names nonetheless, as it is intended that the ATC will be organised regularly for the benefit of Members.
