The Professional Indemnity Insurance and Risk Management (“PII & RM”) Department aims to cultivate good work ethics and risk-aware culture amongst law firm staff and lawyers through its initiatives and activities.  Since 2010, the PII & RM Department has organised four sessions of the Risk Management for Staff Workshop.  The workshop addresses law firm staff members on how to better assist the lawyers and perform their everyday job requirements.  This year, three Risk Management for Staff Workshops was organised, two in Kuala Lumpur (July and November) and one in Alor Setar (September).  

The second Kuala Lumpur Risk Management for Staff Workshop was held on 24 Nov 2011 at Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Bar Council.  The workshop was attended by 60 participants, with some participants coming from as far as Sarawak.  The participants consisted of mostly legal support staff members with a few lawyers in attendance.

Upon registration, participants were given a kit containing workshop materials, The Practice Area Checklist CD-ROM, and two booklets from the Best Practice Guide Series — “Time Management for Lawyers” and “Law Practice Management: Increasing Productivity & Profit”.

Six speakers were invited to speak on four sessions: Communication:  Connecting People (Seamus Tan), Accounting with Integrity (Ng Jo-anne and Heron Khalid Goh), Risk Management: Productivity at Work (Wong Li Chin) and Office Administration:  Ace It! (Isaac Lim and GK Ganesan).  The topics that were covered included communication, law firm accounts, office administration, and file and time management — all essentials to the smooth running of a law firm.  The speakers shared their experiences, and gave advice and ideas on how to risk proof the workplace and work process.

At the end of the day, the participants gave very positive feedback for the workshop.  They rated the speakers as good and interesting.  77% of the participants stated that they would encourage their peers to attend the workshop.
