Article contributed by Mysahra Shawkat, Officer, Professional Indemnity Insurance and Risk Management Department and photos by M Faizal Mahat and Syahizan Md Din, Administrative Assistants, Bar Council Risk management is all about managing risks. Since 2010, the Professional Indemnity Insurance and Risk Management (“PII & RM”) Department has been conducting risk management workshops specifically tailored for law firm staff members. The workshop, Risk Management for Staff, covers communication, law firm accounts, office administration, and file and time management. Apart from helping the law firm staff members to improve themselves in their daily job requirements, the workshop exposes the risks emanating from their daily routine, and how to avoid and rectify, or minimise, the impact of the situation. For example, the risks of erroneously sending an email to the wrong recipient pertaining to a sensitive case or file. Recently the Risk Management for Staff Workshop was held on 21 June 2012 (Thursday) at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Bar Council. By 8 June 2012, the department had received 82 registrations and approximately 15 registrations were turned down as they were received after the closing date. Upon registration, participants were given a kit containing workshop materials, The Practice Area Checklist CD-ROM, and two booklets from the Best Practice Guide Series — “Time Management for Lawyers” and “Law Practice Management: Increasing Productivity & Profit”.
During the workshop, five speakers addressed the participants on four modules: Seumas Tan on “Communication: Connecting People”, Ng Jo-anne and Heron Khalid Goh on “Accounting with Integrity”, Ezri Abd Wahab on “Office Administration: Ace It!”, and GK Ganesan on “Risk Management: Productivity @ Work”. The speakers are senior lawyers, consultants and office managers eager to share their knowledge in their field for the benefit of the legal profession. They presented their session in the hope that the participants cultivate good work ethics and are able to better assist lawyers.
From the feedback that was collected after the workshop, the session “Office Administration: Ace It!” was rated the highest and most liked. It is also noted that 98% of participants agreed that the workshop met their expectations. Most of the participants left comments of satisfaction on the choice of speakers and the workshop as a whole. The next one-day intensive Risk Management for Staff Workshop in Kuala Lumpur will be held on 1 Nov 2012 (Thursday). The PII & RM Department is currently accepting registrations. In order to avoid disappointments, we advise you to register your staff members early.
