The Fundamentals of Legal Practice Jamie Wong shared her
experience and what she found useful when she set up her own law firm. Although she runs a sole proprietorship,
she discussed various factors to consider for setting up a partnership. She also informed participants of the risks
and issues when running a practice, and gave ideas on setting up systems and
procedures in a firm. |

Accounting and Taxation For this session, participants were informed of the requirements to maintain the required accounts and to have proper accounting processes in place. Lalitha Ambigei, herself an accountant, gave participants insights on information that needs to be documented, as well as the documents required for accounting records. |
Karen Cheah |
Winning Ways Through Civil Litigation Practice This session by Karen Cheah highlighted the different court jurisdictions, and the documents required when handling a litigation matter. She also highlighted scenarios where lawyers tend to make mistakes. Earlier on, she gave a
briefing on the Anti–Money Laundering, Anti–Terrorism Financing and Proceeds
of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (“AMLA”) and requirements by law firms to
abide by the Act. |
Tan Kim Soon |
Conveyancing Through a Competitive Climate In the conveyancing
session, Tan Kim Soon enlightened participants on the pitfalls, and mistakes
lawyers make, when handling conveyancing files. He alerted participants on the changes in
procedures and documents in conveyancing practice. He also discussed case law pertaining to negligence
of lawyers. |

Bar Council and You: Obligations and Requirements This session was divided into two parts: (1) Bar Council’s requirements, presented by Gayathri Chidambara Iyer from the Bar Council Membership Department; and (2) PII requirements, presented by Johan Shahar, Vice President, Malaysian Bar Scheme Department, Jardine Lloyd Thompson Sdn Bhd. This session provided
participants with the latest updates on the requirements of setting up a new
practice as well as matters concerning partnerships. |
In short, the Getting Started! Workshop is a platform for participants to satisfy their queries, and provides them an opportunity to network among lawyers and speakers, and to share their own personal experiences. The workshop, which carried seven CPD points, ended at approximately 5:20 pm, and participants were given a certificate of attendance as they signed out for the day.
