The Professional Indemnity Insurance (“PII”) and Risk Management Department organised a Getting Started! Workshop at the Abdullah A Rahman Auditorium, Johore Bar Building, on 17 Aug 2017. The one–day workshop was held from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, and comprised several modules ranging from running a law firm to selected practice areas. Approximately 33 participants attended the event.
The one–day workshop is aimed mainly at providing lawyers with ideas on the advantages and how–to’s of running one’s own law firm. Lawyers are alerted to the issues that might arise, and strategies to overcome or avoid practice roadblocks and other adverse situations.
The speakers for this workshop mainly consisted of lawyers as well as an accountant, who were not shy to share their experiences. Six speakers gave presentations and attended to the enquiries from participants:
(1) Mysahra Shawkat (PII and Risk Management Department, Bar Council) and Johan Shahar (Jardine Lloyd Thompson Sdn Bhd), for the session entitled “Bar Council & You: Obligations and Privileges”;
(2) R Jayabalan, for the session on “The Fundamentals of Legal Practice”;
(3) Lalitha Ambigei, for the session entitled “Accounting & Taxation”;
(4) Karen Cheah Yee Lynn, for the “Briefing on AMLA” and “Winning Ways Through Civil Litigation” sessions; and
(5) Abd Murad Che Chik for the “Conveyancing in a Competitive Climate” session.
The Getting Started! Workshop provides an avenue for participants to seek answers to their enquiries, as well as an opportunity for networking among lawyers and speakers, and sharing their personal experiences.
