The Report of the Police Commission PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 May 2005 08:49pm

ImageThe Police Commission has submitted its report of findings and recommendations. It is learned that whether or not the report will be made public is now left to the Cabinet to decide.

The decision to constitute the Police Commission was a refreshing step in the right direction; and one applauded by many, including the Bar Council. Now that the tasks have been performed, the entire nation awaits the fruits of its labour. It will painfully negate our society's push for accountability and transparency if these fruits are kept forbidden from the public view, even if partially.

The interim report of the Police Commission was not made public, on the ground that it was an interim one and hence lacked completeness or comprehensiveness. While many did not find that reason convincing, patience was exercised in the knowledge that surely the final product will not be denied to all Malaysians. That knowledge must not be turned into wishful thinking.

It is crucial, it is vital, and it is undeniably and absolutely essential, that the Police Commission's report be made public in its entirety. That is the only way to maintain the increased credibility of the present Government, which was brought about by the formation of the Commission in the first place. The findings and recommendations of the Police Commission concern matters close to the daily experience of Malaysians, who are entitled to know each and every detail in the report, unveiled and unconcealed.

Societal reform is a long journey. There is no victory in taking the first few steps and then halting or heading back. Making public the report of the Police Commission in its entirety is the necessary next step in this newly begun journey.

Dated 3rd May 2005

Yeo Yang Poh
Chairman
Bar Council
