SUHAKAM's First Annual Report PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 21 April 2001 12:00am

The Bar Council commends the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) on its First Annual Report presented to Parliament by its chairman, Tan Sri Musa Hitam, on Thursday, 19.4.2001. The report is testimony of the commitment and seriousness of SUHAKAM towards the work and obligations undertaken by SUHAKAM in the protection and development of human rights in Malaysia.

SUHAKAM has taken a positive step towards the protection of human rights in Malaysia by reviewing the many laws which restrict the civil liberties of Malaysians and which infringe the basic human rights of citizens.

SUHAKAM’s plan to review and examine in detail the laws which provide for detention without trial in particular, the Internal Security Act 1960, is laudable. The Bar Council looks forward with expectation to the results of SUHAKAM’s review of such laws.

The Bar Council strongly urges the Government to consider the views of SUHAKAM seriously and to give them due weight although the Government is not bound by such views.

The Bar Council reiterates its call to the Government to repeal the ISA forthwith.

SUHAKAM has embarked on a long journey towards creating a Malaysian public more conscious of their basic human rights and enhancing the Government’s respect for fundamental liberties such as freedom of assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of religion. The Bar Council wholly supports SUHAKAM in its endeavours.

It is timely for the Government to respond positively to the clarion call of its citizens for greater civil rights and liberties as the country moves towards further development.

Dated this 21st day of April 2001

Mah Weng Kwai
Chairman
