Police protection against criminal intimidation PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 October 2001 12:00am
The Bar Council is concerned over reports of suspects terrorising the family of an eight year old girl whom the suspects were alleged to have raped and the apparent failure of the police in taking prompt and sufficient action in the matter.

Police surveillance and a visit by a concerned senator had failed to deter the suspects from going to the girl's house and threatening to kill her family if police reports against them were not withdrawn. The family endured continual abuse both physical and mental from the thugs for at least two months and the girl had attempted suicide twice due in part to her inability to deal with the severity of the harassment.

The Bar Council notes with distress that despite all of the above and numerous police reports having been lodged by the family of the girl, the police has not succeeded in affording adequate protection to the family and taking the necessary steps to put an end to the abuse and criminal intimidation.

The Bar Council urges the police to take all the appropriate measures that are commensurate with the seriousness of the offences committed by the suspects to prevent further offences from being committed which clearly amount to an affront and flagrant disregard of the criminal justice system. A failure to restore and enforce law and order and a corresponding failure to protect the public from crime will encourage the public to lose confidence in the criminal justice system.

Dated this 23rd day of October 2001.

Mah Weng Kai
Chairman
Bar Council
