The Bar Council will be holding a National Law Awareness Week from the 15th to the 21st of September 2003. Its theme will be “Legal Aid :Your Basic Right”.
The objective of this week-long event is to promote awareness among all sectors of the Malaysian public with regard to legal rights and obligations. The “legal health” of a country is crucial to its growth and prosperity. Sustained progress in a society or nation cannot be achieved without an expanding awareness of legal rights on the part of its population in general. Hence, the promotion of law awareness and rights awareness is essential to nation building.
A variety of events will be simultaneously organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centres in the respective States at various locations nationwide. These will include talks and programmes in schools, legal aid clinics at supermarkets, malls, bus terminals and pasar malam, and outreach clinics at rural settlements. Some programmes will also be jointly organised with women groups, orang asli organisations and other non-governmental organisations. An estimate of 1500 lawyers are expected to be involved as volunteers during the week.
Members of the public are encouraged to take advantage of the activities that will be held during the coming Law Awareness Week.
