Ambiga Sreenevasan Bar Council supports Raja Nazrin's call for judicial reform
Bar Council hails call for ‘judicial renaissance’

The Bar Council welcomes and supports the address by Raja Nazrin at the Judge’s Conference and the call by him for a Judicial Renaissance. The Bar Council also welcomes and shares the views expressed by His Royal Highness on the supremacy of the Federal Constitution and the importance of the doctrine of separation of powers.

A blueprint for the future of the judiciary, the message is timely and compelling. It represents the aspirations and expectations of the Bar and the members of the public from the move for judicial reform.

Response to the CJ's speech

The Bar Council also welcomes the show of support by the Chief Justice for the call for an apology in relation to the 1988 Judicial Crisis.

The Bar Council is further pleased to see that the Judiciary is open to the setting up of a judicial appointments commission. The Bar Council is of the view that this is the immediate step that must be taken to show commitment to judicial reform, judicial independence and judicial excellence.

We agree with the Chief Justice that the appointment of the members of a judicial appointments commission is critical and we also agree that they must be persons of integrity who are knowledgeable, incorruptible, fair and without any vested interest.
