Malaysian Bar President appointed by the IBA to join its mission to Sri Lanka PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 30 August 2001 12:00am
The Malaysian Bar is pleased to announce that its President, Mr. Mah Weng Kwai has been appointed by the International Bar Association (IBA) to join a legal delegation comprising of Lord Brennan QC, former Chairman of the General Council of the Bar of England and Wales, the Honourable Justice V.S. Malimath, former Chief Justice of Kamataka and Kerala, India, and the President of the Malaysian Bar, to visit Sri Lanka from 29/8/2001 to 31/8/2001 to discuss various matters relating to the rule of law and to review the current state of the judiciary and legal profession.

The IBA is a federation of 180 Bar Associations and Law Societies, themselves representing, over 2.5 million lawyers, and in excess of 16,000 individual member lawyers from 183 countries. Formed in 1947, the IBA represents the global legal profession  through its member Bar Associations, Law Societies and individual members. Its aim is to defend the rule of law and lawyers' rights to practice without interference and to provide an international forum for the debate of legal developments.

The delegation was convened after the international legal community raised concerns at the announcement by the Sri Lanka President that there will be a referendum on constitutional reform. The President was recently reported as saying that should a referendum produce a majority vote in favour of replacing the constitution, the government would push through a new constitution without referring to the Parliament.

Arrangements have been made for the delegation to meet inter alia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and members of the judiciary and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.

The delegation's visit would lead to a report on matters relevant to the administration of justice in Sri Lanka and any conclusion reached will be independent and objective.                                           ·

The IBA has a distinguished record of undertaking similar visits to other countries, including to Japan, Kenya, Pakistan and Malaysia. The concern of the IBA is the promotion of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary as they are crucial for the welfare of the people of any country.

The Malaysian Bar deems it an honour that its President has been appointed by the IBA to join its mission to Sri Lanka.

Dated this 30th day of August 2001

Mah Weng Kai
Chairman
Bar Council
