Press Release: Lawyer’s death is a loss to society

The Malaysian Bar is shocked and saddened at the sudden death of G Balasundram, a Member of the Bar who was killed in Ipoh earlier this week.
G Balasundram was an active Member who made notable contributions through his involvement in numerous public interest litigation matters. His death is a loss to the Bar and to society.
The Malaysian Bar is concerned that the violent assault against G Balasundram, and a previous one four years ago, may be related to his profession. We are troubled, in particular, that the security of lawyers may be at risk as a consequence of them performing their professional obligations as advocates and solicitors. Threats to the welfare of lawyers may compromise their independence and ability to carry out their duties fearlessly.
We urge the Police to do the utmost possible to expedite the investigations and to resolve the case speedily, leaving no stone unturned.
The Malaysian Bar extends its heartfelt condolences to G Balasundram’s family and friends on their bereavement.
