KL Bar Committee's Press Release on Video Clip PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 21 September 2007 10:45am

The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee is shocked and dismayed by the report entitled “CJ’s ‘appointment fixing’ caught on tape” and the accompanying video-clip (Malaysiakini, September 19, 2007). It suggests corruption and blatant executive interference with the judiciary, which would undermine the integrity and independence of our judiciary. Thus, an immediate and thorough investigation by the Police and the Anti-Corruption Agency, of the protagonist on the video and all the persons named or mentioned as well on all the matters that were raised in it, is warranted. We endorse and support the call made by the Bar Council for the establishment of a royal commission of inquiry into this matter.

The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee takes the view that this whole episode further underscores the need for an independent judicial commission for the appointment of judges. It will undoubtedly be the first meaningful step towards restoring the image of the judiciary in the eyes of the public.

Dated this 21st day of September 2007

R Ravindra Kumar
Chairman
Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee

You act first
written by Manjeet Singh Dhillon, Friday, September 21 2007 10:17 pm

Good, Mr. Chairman.

But why don't you act first. Is the protagonist a member of your local Bar. Does he have to be? No! So instead of calling upon others to move and act, can the KL Bar Committee not, collectively, initiate, lodge, forward action against the protagonist? Look, instead worrying about the CJ and his now so-suspect judiciary, let's clean our closet first - and sort out out that telephonist!

Statements are beautiful - they sound so good. But action is better. Independent judicial commissions? Don't make me laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - will there be another phone call? More padding? Who then? Another clip? See how cynical I have become?
