Deportation of a foreign housewife with two children PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 December 1998 12:00am

With reference to the report in the STAR Thursday December 17, 1998 (p.17) the Bar Council is prepared to take up the case of the foreign housewife with two children facing deportation because of expiry of her visa and lack of support from her Malaysian husband who is said to have abandoned her. The Bar Council had consistently taken the stand that a humanitarian approach must be adopted in these cases so that a mother would not be forcible separated from her locally born children.

The Bar Council had previously called for suitable safeguards to be introduced in our immigration laws to ensure that foreign wives are not subject to jeopardy because of the changed attitude or conduct of their Malaysian husbands. In these cases, there is a legitimate expectation that the foreign wife would be permitted a continuous right of a stay in the country by the Immigration Authorities. The assistance to be rendered by the Bar Council would include the commencement of legal proceedings, if necessary.

Dated: 21 December 1998.

Dato Dr. Cyrus V Das
President
Malaysian Bar.
