Continued detention of Encik Zulkifli Nordin PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 03 October 1998 12:00am

The Bar Council wishes to express its deep concern over the continued detention of Encik Zulkifli Nordin, a member of the Bar Council’s Human Rights Committee, under the Internal Security Act, together with numerous other persons.

The Bar Council calls for the immediate release of Encik Zulkifli Nordin and all other persons detained under the ISA, and if warranted, for such persons to be charged in Court under the relevant laws so that the principles of the Rule of Law and the right to fair trial and Justice can prevail.

The Bar Council has always maintained that the ISA is an oppressive piece of legislation and condemns the continued use of this draconian legislation. The ISA is in violation of the Rule of Law, Human Rights and the principles of democratic Government and calls the Government to repeal the ISA in its entirety. In the meanwhile, the Bar Council also calls upon the Government to accord persons detained under the ISA the right to know the reasons for their detention and to inform the families of the same; the right to have unimpeded access to Counsel; and the right to have reasonable and regular visits from their families.

Dated: 3rd day of October, 1998.

R. R. Chelvarajah

Vice-President
