Call to set up an independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate the injuries suffered by Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim

The Bar Council states that it is right that the Inspector General of Police should resign his office and assume full responsibility for the injuries suffered by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim whilst in police custody. Indeed his resignation became imperative after the conclusion made by the Honourable Attorney General in his Statement on 5th January 1999 that he is of the opinion that “the Royal Malaysian Police is fully responsible for the injuries to (Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim) whilst he was in the legal custody of the Police.”
However, the Bar Council states that the resignation should not deter the need to complete the investigation and identify the police officers who caused the injuries as stated in the Attorney General’s Statement. The Bar Council urges that the investigation be carried out speedily and the perpetrators of the injuries be identified for prosecution because of public concern over the whole incident.
The Bar Council reiterates its stand that an independent Commission of Inquiry be set up in the interest of justice to inquire into the whole incident and identify the alleged offenders and in this respect welcomes the statement by the Honourable Prime Minister yesterday.
