Assault on Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 January 1999 12:00am

The Bar Council refers to the Statement of the Honourable Attorney General (NST 6 January 1999) in respect of the investigation into the injuries suffered by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim whilst in police custody.

The Bar Council views with grave concern the result or the conclusion made in the Statement that there are 'injuries on certain parts of his body which are proved to have been caused by police officers whilst he was in police custody'. In this regard the Bar Council also notes the opinion of the Attorney General that "the Royal Malaysian Police is fully responsible for the injuries to (Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim) whilst he was in the legal custody of the Police”.

The Bar Council wishes to state that these matters are of grave concern not only to the legal profession but to the public at large as they vitally concern our system of administration of law and order and the treatment of persons in police custody.

In this respect the Bar Council notes that the Attorney General has rightly given the assurance that he will not hesitate to consent to the institution of prosecution against any individual proved to have committed or abetted the commission of such offence.

The Bar Council regrets that the police investigation is yet not fully completed although this matter is of grave concern to the public.

The Bar Council calls upon the Honourable Attorney General to direct the special investigation team to speedily complete its task and to institute prosecution against those identified to have caused the injuries or abetted the same.

The Bar Council takes this opportunity to reiterate the resolution adopted by the Malaysian Bar at its EGM on October 10, 1998 calling for the appointment of a Royal Commission on Inquiry over the incident.

Dated: 6 January 1999

Dato’ Dr. Cyrus Das
President
