Anwar Ibrahim Commission of Inquiry PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 19 February 1999 12:00am

The Bar Council will be applying for observer or watching brief status at the Anwar Ibrahim Commission of Inquiry commencing on Monday 22nd February, 1999. The Bar Council as a body concerned with the enforcement of law and justice is vitally interested in all matters relating to custodial violence to prevent its recurrence. The Bar Council has from the outset called for an independent commission of inquiry into the injuries suffered by YB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim whilst in police custody. The Bar Council is pleased to note that the Commission has organised itself swiftly to begin its hearings on February 22. The Bar Council hopes that the Commission will move with all deliberate speed to complete its inquiry and submit its Report and recommendations to the Yang Di Pertuan Agong. It is the earnest hope of the Bar Council that justice will be done and that the person or persons responsible for the injuries are brought to account.

In this regard, the Bar Council again reiterates its oft- repeated call to the Commission to use this opportunity to stipulate general guidelines to prevent the occurrence of custodial violence as is done in other countries with a developed legal system.

The Bar Council will be pleased to render whatever assistance to the Commission, if called upon, on the law relating to custodial violence locally and in foreign jurisdictions.

Dated: 19th February 1999

Dato’ Dr. Cyrus Das
President
