12th Malaysian Law Conference: Evolving a Malaysian Nation - The Role of Law and Lawyers PDF Print E-mail

The 12th Malaysian  Law Conference will be held at the Hotel Nikko Kuala Lumpur from 10-12 December 2003.

The Biennial Conference will be declared open by His Royal Higlmess DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah.

The theme of the Conference is 'Evolving  a Malaysian  Nation: The Role of Law and Lawyers'.

A keynote address on the theme will be delivered by veteran politician and former Minister of Finance, YBM Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Special addresses over the three-day Conference will be delivered by the Minister of International Trade and Finance, YB Dato Seri Rafidah Aziz on 'WTO and its Impact on the Services Sector'; by the Attorney-General YB Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail on 'Prospects of a Common Bar Exam'; by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department YB Dato Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim on 'The Role of Law & Lawyers in Nation Building';and by Dr Chin Jing Jib, Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Singapore Medical Association on 'Ethical Issues in Performing High Risk, New Frontier Surgery'.

This Conference departs from previous Conferences in that there will be two special sessions which will not be speaker-based but will be in the form of open debate and dialogue. The first one will be on Tuesday afternoon, 11 December with a debate on the recent surgical operation on the Bijani twins in Singapore. The debate topic is on the proposition that 'The Operation was Proper from a Medico-legal and Ethical Standpoint'. A doctor/lawyer team will appear for each side for and against the proposition. This session is being organised with the co-operation of the Malaysian Medical Association and is open also to doctors.

The next special event is on Friday morning, 12 December with an open dialogue and discussion on the important subject of "Have our Institutions-Parliament, Judiciary and the Public Services-Strengthened or Declined?' This open discussion will be led by senior lawyer YM Raja Aziz Addruse and well-known TV talk show moderator cum lawyer Norina Yahya.

The Conference will also discuss regular topics on commercial law and banking, intellectual property law, mediation, criminal law and syariah law. A number of distinguished speakers and panellists have been invited to lead in the discussions.
