Talk on The Rule of Law: A Challenged Tradition (25 May 2015)
This year England and Wales will be celebrating the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta, widely regarded as one of the foundation documents of the rule of law. The speaker for this talk, Andrew Caplen, will share how the principles enshrined in the Magna Carta are as valuable and relevant as ever. He will discuss the challenges to the rule of law, both in England and Wales and internationally, as well as the vital role that the legal profession has in ensuring its continued existence.
The Bar Council Human Rights Committee invites all Members to this talk on 25 May 2015 (Monday). The details of the talk are as follows:

Time: 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm (Registration will begin at 5:30 pm)
Registration Fee: Admission is free but advance registration is required
About the Speaker
Andrew Caplen is the President of the Law Society of England and Wales (“Law Society”). The Law Society is the professional body for solicitors, with a membership in excess of 160,000. He is a Consultant with Heppenstalls in Hampshire. Andrew has been a Law Society Council member since 2000. He was Chair of the Law Society’s Access to Justice Committee from 2008 until 2012, and Chair of the Law Society’s Management Board and Treasurer of the Law Society Group from 2010 until 2012. He also co–chaired the Law Society Group’s Business Oversight Board during its first year of operation. He was elected as Deputy Vice President of the Law Society in 2012, became its Vice President in 2013 and President in July 2014.
He was one of the co–authors of the Law Society’s Access to Justice Review, and has written and spoken widely on human rights, access to justice and legal aid issues.
