Siti Shahrom and Daniel Albert, the hosts for the eveningThe Gala Dinner started at 8:00 pm, at the Grand Ballroom, Everly Resort Hotel, Malacca, on 2 July 2011 (Saturday).  The theme of the Gala Dinner for the Young Lawyers Convention 2011 was “Oscars of the Bar”.  The hosts for the evening were Siti Shahrom and Daniel Albert.

Although there was no specific dress code for the Gala Dinner, some gorgeous ladies sashayed into the ballroom resplendent in beautiful evening dresses, while some of the gentlemen who waltzed in were attired in dashing tuxedos.  Of course, there were some guests who showed up in their most comfortable attire – shorts and slippers.  However, no one cared for it was the “Oscars of the Bar” after all.

The night started off with a great buffet dinner, followed by an awards presentation for the “Most Colourful Committee of the Bar”.  The nominees for the “Most Colourful Committee of the Bar” were the Constitutional Law Committee, Human Rights Committee and National Legal Aid Committee.

The Chairperson of the Constitutional Law Committee, Syahredzan Johan, was invited on stage to give a presentation.  Syahredzan Johan had prepared a very interesting slideshow to introduce all the activities and workshops of the Constitutional Law Committee.  Just before ending his presentation, Syahredzan Johan made a great statement by saying, “It doesn’t matter whether we win the most colourful awards today; so long as I can gather five more, just five more of you, from this room to join the Constitutional Law Committee, I will be more than happy”.

Seira Sacha was invited on stage next to give a presentation on behalf of the Human Rights Committee.  She introduced all the activities that the Human Rights Committee had conducted in the past and even gave a preview of their upcoming activities, including a plan to provide monitoring teams for the BERSIH 2.0 rally.  Every single guest in the ballroom felt excited hearing her speak.  Although no slideshow or pictures were used, it was a great presentation overall, thus proving true to Seira Sacha’s words at the very beginning of the presentation, “the work speaks for itself”.

Last but not least, was the presentation from the representative of the National Legal Aid Committee, Yohendra Nadarajan.  Even though this presentation did not use any slideshows or pictures either, the style it was delivered in was effective, for by the end, everyone knew the hard facts of how much help legal aid centres have been to the public.  The cheers from the floor were equal, if not more than, those received from the other two nominated committees.

So, which committee won the award for the “Most Colourful Committee of the Bar”?

The winners of the “Most Colourful Committee of the Bar”

The award for the “Most Colourful Committee of the Bar” was awarded to all three nominees in the end!  It was a fitting decision, for considering all the activities that they had carried out in the past, these three committees were no doubt the most colourful of the Bar.

Soon after the award presentation for the “Most Colourful Committee of the Bar”, the results for the treasure hunt event that all delegates had participated in earlier in the evening were announced.  Group 5 was declared the winner, while group 10 was revealed to be the losing team for amassing the lowest points.  With punishments meted out to the losers of the game, the Gala Dinner was called to an end.  It was truly a night to remember, especially after a whole day of sessions, forums and talks.
