Young Lawyers Convention 2011: Activism and the Bar — No Time or Can’t Be Bothered?
Monday, 20 June 2011 12:16pm
Contributed by Vince Chong, Deputy Chairperson, Bar Council National Young Lawyers Committee
A worrying trend is emerging. It is this. In this time and age where globalisation has taken root and the world is revolving more and more around the acquisition of wealth, the activists are a diminishing lot. So few are keen to be activists. Less are carrying the flag and waving it for a better future.
Why is that?
Is it a lack of desire? It is a lack of care? Or is it the fact that young lawyers are so hard pressed by their employers that they barely have time to meet their families, much less play a hand in the fight for a better profession?
Surely the lawyer is the best person in knowledge and in law to fight for another’s rights? To fight for another’s dignity and pride? To fight for and defend justice?
Acknowledging this, the Young Lawyers Convention this year will focus on the dwindling number of young lawyers taking up the baton and defending the fight. The speakers will be tasked to dissect this current trend and empower young lawyers by providing insights on their everlasting and unrelenting quests in the causes they believe in. What keeps them going? And what keeps them ahead in their arduous tasks?
Join us at the Young Lawyers Convention 2011 and allow our illustrious delegates to inspire and empower you!
After all, these words, by Martin Luther King Jr, are true:
Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable ... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.
See you at the Young Lawyers Convention 2011.
