KUALA LUMPUR:
The National Young Lawyers’ Committee is conducting a nationwide survey among young working professionals on issues regarding national unity.

Its chairman, Edmund Bon, said the survey would determine whether national unity resonated among the youths and whether young Malaysians could relate to it.

"At a glance, the awareness of national unity is very urban-centric and the survey will find out whether people in rural areas and less developed states feel the same way about national unity as their urban counterparts," he said.

He added that the survey would poll about 1,500 youths and was targeted to be completed by Aug 31.

This follows the convening of the First Young Malaysians Round-table Discussion on National Unity and Development in Malaysia on April 3.

Bon and a delegation of young Malaysians later presented a 20-point document to Minister in Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, on their recommendations and suggestions regarding national unity.

The document called:

• on the government to engage young Malaysians through active participation in youth movements, non-governmental organisations and religious groups in relation to nation building;

• for the rejection of ethnic-based politics and racist ideologies in any form;

• for the convening of constructive dialogues in a safe and open atmosphere of mutual understanding, as it is an important tool in building bridges between ethnic groups, culture and religion, and is a crucial step to enhancing inter-ethic and inter-religious relations; and,

• for all educational institutes to have programmes and training modules that can improve ethnic and religious relations.
