The National Young Lawyers Committee (NYLC) is proud to announce today the launch of its inaugural column of the Star newspaper, “Putik Lada”. Translated from Malay meaning “pepper buds”, “Putik Lada” marks an exciting new venture of the NYLC into the world of the media, creating a platform whereby the views and opinions of young lawyers can be discussed freely.

Today’s first piece, aptly titled “A clarion call to young lawyers” written by one of the Deputy Chairs of the NYLC, H.R. Dipendra, seeks to explore the beginnings of the NYLC as well as an introduction to what the NYLC stands for and what it seeks to achieve. To quote Dipendra, “…the NYLC hopes to harness and channel the energy and idealism of young lawyers in matters that affect the Bar and the country…”

The piece also encapsulates the early struggles of young lawyers with the amendment to the Legal Profession Act in 1976 which prohibited lawyers under 7 years of practice to hold office in the Bar Council and State Bar Committees, and subsequently its repeal some 28 years later in 2006. The NYLC was instrumental in pushing for this repeal and the freedom enjoyed by young lawyers today can be said to be partly owed to the efforts of the NYLC.

Having started from humble beginnings, the NYLC is indeed proud of what it has evolved to today. This is indeed an exciting new venture for the NYLC and it is hoped that through this avenue, the voices of young lawyers will be heard even more. They are after all the future leaders of the Bar and perhaps even our nation.
