The National Young Lawyers Committee (“NYLC”) for the term of 2011/12 launched, amongst others, a project to meet young lawyers all over Peninsular Malaysia.  We call this self-funded project “Projek Jelajah NYLC”.

The primary purpose of the project is to visit, meet & have dialogues with younger members of the Bar.  Our first stop: Malacca Bar Young Lawyers Committee (“YLC”).

On 28 May 2011, a few members of the NYLC travelled to Malacca for a meet-up with Malacca Bar YLC.  Led by the evergreen Desmond Ho (Malacca Bar Representative to Bar Council), the following members of the Malacca YLC were at the Malacca Bar Building for the meet-up: Mohd Fadil b Mohd Yusof, Valerie Choo, Jason Goh Han Koon, Michael Tan Ching Hooi, Ler Lian Heng (Multimedia University student), Lee Jing Jau and Vinson Tay Soon Chuan.

NYLC was led by Richard Wee and Vince Chong, Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of NYLC, respectively.  Also part of the NYLC convoy were Sandesh Kabir, Seira Sacha & Aston Paiva.

The meet-up was interesting as both sides discussed ways to collaborate and work towards assisting the younger members of the Bar in Malacca.  A special mention must be made of the historical narrative of the evolution of the NYLC, as recited by both Desmond Ho and Richard Wee.  We would like to believe that the excerpts of their experiences has led to a deeper insight on what NYLC does and the role Bar Council plays vis-à-vis young lawyers on both sides: the NYLC team and the Malacca team.  Also on top of the agenda was the upcoming Young Lawyers Convention 2011.

After the meeting, the NYLC members, together with some members of the Malacca YLC, drove to Klebang to visit the Everly Beach Resort, the host resort for the Young Lawyers Convention.  We were rather pleased with the facilities and look forward to holding the Convention there.

The trip was successful, and the NYLC is already planning another trip soon.  Perhaps we will visit Kelantan next.

* Watch out for more news on the 4th Young Lawyers Convention 2011.  The registration fee is only RM100 per lawyer, which will include all accommodation and food (travel cost is not included).  The Convention will be an ideal platform for young lawyers to build network and bridges, and the focus of this year’s Convention is to work towards a better Bar, as the future and shape of the Bar is very much in the hands of young lawyers.  Come attend the Convention to shape the future you want for your Bar.
