Three X-Games have been identified, headed by separate captains: dragon boating, rock climbing and go-karting. Through this initiative, NYLC hopes to bring a unique twist to the more traditional sports activities. ![]() The X-Games unit kick-started its activities with rock climbing. NYLC has had two rock-climbing sessions at Camp5 Climbing Gym, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Selangor, on 16 and 30 Oct 2011 (Sundays). Organised by the captain, Foong Cheng Leong, the first session was attended by six young lawyers from both Kuala Lumpur Bar and Selangor Bar. The introductory training session, conducted by Camp5 instructors for approximately five hours, guided young lawyers through the dos and the don’ts of rock climbing: safety precautions regarding belay ropes and harnesses, knotting, belaying and climbing, and the proper usage of footholds and fixtures on wall surfaces or routes. The session concluded with young lawyers climbing and belaying each other on high vertical climbing walls, and even trying out bouldering: a style of rock climbing undertaken without ropes over a soft-padded crash pad. ![]() The second session on 30 Oct 2011 was organised and led by the captain himself, and attracted eight young lawyers. Foong Cheng Leong proved to be stricter than the Camp5 instructors. Following a tutorial on the basics of knotting and climbing, he had the first-timers climb many different walls in order to familiarise themselves with the basics of climbing. Young lawyers who had attended the first training session, however, were required to climb the walls based on colour codes: they were only allowed to grip and step on footholds of a single colour to reach the top of the wall – an unbelievably difficult challenge for beginners! He then inspired the young lawyers present by climbing the same colour-coded route with superior skill and ease, thus showing that practice does make perfect. ![]() All in all, the two rock-climbing sessions were a success, and the young lawyers who participated in them are now eager for more sessions! Perhaps NYLC, captained by Foong Cheng Leong, might decide to go climbing in Putrajaya next? ![]() For more information on NYLC rock-climbing sessions, please contact Vince Chong by email at vckypcsky@gmail.com, or check out the “National Young Lawyers Committee” Facebook page.
