The Malaysian Bar is a creature of statute established under
the Advocates and Solicitors' Ordinance 1947 which was subsequently replaced by
the Legal Profession Act 1976. It is an independent Bar with the aim (among
other things) of upholding the rule of law, and protecting the interests of the
legal profession and the public.
The legal profession in Malaysia is a fused profession with a current membership
of approximately 12,000 members as at 2006, and its membership is increasing by
5-10% annually. Each advocate and solicitor is automatically a member of the
Malaysian Bar so long as he/she holds a valid Practicing Certificate.
The Bar Council comprises thirty-six (36) members who are elected to manage the
affairs and execute the functions of the Malaysian Bar. The Council members are
made up of the immediate past President and Vice-President, twelve (12) members
elected from throughout Peninsular Malaysia by way of postal ballot, eleven (11)
Chairpersons of the State Bar Committees and eleven (11) Representatives to the
Bar Council elected from the State Bars. The office-bearers of the Council
consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.
To ensure effective management of the affairs of the Malaysian Bar, the Bar
Council is assisted by various committees (34 at present) on diverse areas of
practice and administration of justice. Members and pupils-in-chambers are
encouraged to participate in the work of these committees.
If you are a young lawyer or pupil-in-chambers, the National
Young Lawyers’ Committee may be for YOU!
• We are a committee set up to represent, protect and promote the interests of
young lawyers and pupils-in-chambers.
• We work to enhance the continuing professional development
of young lawyers and pupils-in-chambers for the betterment of the Bar and
society.
• We provide a platform for interaction, and facilitate the
exchange of perspectives and views on numerous issues concerning the Bar,
professional practice, the administration of justice and law reform.
• We maintain and nurture good working relationships with
other Bar Council committees, various governmental agencies, NGOs, other
organisations and the media, and to work together with these committees,
agencies and organisations in rallying issues of concern affecting young lawyers
and society in general.
