NYLC Jelajah, Penang: A Pupil’s Perspective (22 Oct 2011) PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 January 2012 11:00am
Contributed by Melody Tay Shiru, Member, Malacca Bar Young Lawyers and Chambering Pupils Subcommittee

Initially, I was pretty clueless about what I would gain from the Bar Council National Young Lawyers Committee (“NYLC”)’s Projek Jelajah trip to Penang on 22 Oct 2011 (Saturday).  All I could think about was how much fun it would be to go sight-seeing around the Pearl of the Orient!

After the forum, lunch was served
Surprisingly, I learned a lot during the trip.  Not only did I get to meet other lawyers, but I also found out more about the objectives and importance of continuing professional development (“CPD”) programmes.  Attendance at CPD programmes is vital to keep lawyers updated on the latest developments in the law, which is ever evolving, as well as recent cases.  Furthermore, CPD programmes can better equip Members of the Bar to face the impending challenges that liberalisation of the legal services sector will bring, once foreign legal firms begin being set up in Malaysia.

When I first heard about liberalisation, I became worried that the result would be more and more lawyers having to share an already-shrinking pie!  However, during the trip I discovered that Malaysian lawyers are actually capable of competing with foreign lawyers.  In fact, allowing foreign laws firms to set up in Malaysia is actually a positive development, as it will compel us to move forward with the times and not be too comfortable with the status quo.  Hence, it will put us Malaysians on the world map!

However, I also learned that as we progress, we must keep in mind that, as lawyers, we are not only protectors of the law, but of people’s rights as well.  This is especially important in Malaysia as we are still a developing country and we are at a very critical stage, not only in the political arena, but also in educating people about their basic rights and fighting for those rights to be upheld.

All in all, the Projek Jelajah trip to Penang was simultaneously educational and fun!
