NYLC Jelajah: Kelantan (10 July 2011) PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:01am
Contributed by Yip Xiaoheng

On 10 July 2011 (Sunday), Richard Wee, Chairperson of the Bar Council National Young Lawyers Committee (“NYLC”), Vince Chong, Deputy Chairperson of NYLC, and Edmund Bon, former Chairperson of NYLC, embarked on a day trip from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu, Kelantan.  The objective of the trip was to speak to the young lawyers of Kelantan at the Kelantan Bar-NYLC Forum.  Jointly organised by the NYLC and the Kelantan Bar Committee, the event was attended by more than 30 young lawyers and pupils in chambers.

The forum, which began at about 2:00 pm, was moderated by Aziz b Haniff, Chairperson of the Kelantan Bar Committee.  During the forum, Richard Wee introduced the NYLC by providing a brief history and the impact it has made on the Malaysian Bar.  He then referred to the Malacca Statement, which was issued at the Young Lawyers Convention 2011 on 3 July 2011.  The Malacca Statement was also distributed to the floor.  Richard Wee continued by urging young lawyers to further improve themselves and strive to become better lawyers, a plea consistent with the theme of the Young Lawyers Convention 2011, “Towards A Better Bar”.

Vince Chong also shared his comments and views pertaining to the Malacca Statement, in addition to encouraging young lawyers to embrace technology.

Edmund Bon then spoke about the Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee’s "MyConstitution Campaign" and gave general comments about activism in the Bar.  His speech was very well received and many of the audience were seen to be in agreement with his comments.

During the question-and-answer session, enquiries related to the Malacca Statement, such as the liberalisation of the Bar, and general questions about continuing professional development courses were raised.  Members of the audience also asked about the upcoming e-filing system and got a feel of how Kuala Lumpur lawyers dealt with the introduced technology, hardware and software.  The three speakers continued by discussing the questions posed and the forum came to a close at approximately 4:15 pm.

The NYLC is grateful for the support of Bar Council, for partially funding the forum, and the Kelantan Bar Committee, particularly Aziz b Haniff and Andrew Yeap Kuang Wei, Secretary, for the assistance rendered in organising the forum.

The NYLC now looks forward to visiting another state as part of its “NYLC Jelajah” project.  The NYLC may visit Seremban, Negeri Sembilan next.
