During the 2009/2010 term, the National Young Lawyers Committee (NYLC) is continuing with its primary objectives of:
1. Promoting and protecting the interests of young lawyers and pupils-in-chambers;
2. Enhancing the continuing professional development of young lawyers and pupils-in-chambers for the betterment of the Malaysian Bar and society;
3. Providing a platform for interaction, and facilitating the exchange of perspectives and views, on numerous issues concerning the Bar, professional practice, the administration of justice and law reform; and
4. Maintaining and nurturing good working relationships with other Bar Council committees, various governmental agencies, NGOs and the media, in advocating for issues of concern affecting young lawyers and the society in general.
NYLC is involved in the following projects:
1.
Education for Every Child Forum jointly organised by NYLC, Human Rights
Committee (HRC) and UNICEF in conjunction with the launch of the State
of the World’s Children 2010 Special Edition Report
In a move to advocate for the rights of the children in Malaysia, NYLC
in collaboration with HRC and UNICEF organised the “Education for Every
Child Forum”. The event, which took place on 20 Nov 2009, coincides
with the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dr Siti Hasmah was a patron of the Forum.
The Forum focused on the progress of, as well as the challenges in, the
Malaysian education system, in relation to education opportunities for
the children of the disabled, refugees, stateless and indigenous
people. The findings of the Forum will be presented to the Government,
together with the call for concrete measures to be taken with regards
to improving education for the children.
2.
The Putik Lada Column
This fortnightly column in the Star, to
highlight issues affecting lawyers and society in general, was launched
on 6 June 2008 and is still going strong with articles contributed by
young lawyers from around the country.
3.
The Oral History Project
The Oral History Project is an attempt
to compile the viewpoints, wisdom and experiences of lawyers around the
country with a special focus on the key events of the history of the
Bar. The Oral History Project will be recorded via video interviews
and stored in CDs, to be made accessible to all lawyers. It is hoped
that through this project, lawyers will come to appreciate the rich
history of the Bar and its various struggles and achievements
throughout the decades.
4.
Working Conditions of Young Lawyers
This is an ongoing project
by NYLC to obtain the views of young lawyers throughout the country on
the challenges they face at work. Feedback is being solicited via
questionnaires and the end result will be collated and presented at the
4th Young Lawyers Convention 2010.
5.
The 4th Young Lawyers Convention 2010
The 4th Young Lawyers
Convention 2010 aims to get young lawyers interested and excited about
the future of the legal profession, as well as to inspire them to go
beyond the basics of being a lawyer. The Convention will also serve as
a platform for the lawyers to give back to society and the nation
through corporate social responsibility and environmental activism.
