Noor Arianti OsmanKUALA LUMPUR: The inaugural meeting of the NYLC for this term, which took place on Friday, April 25, was business as usual. It received attendance of fresh and previous committee members; discussed new and ongoing projects and it saw consensus of minds and constructive squabbles in all the usual easiness over refreshments and carefree giggles.

Unanimously elected Deputy Chairpersons are HR Dipendra and Audrey Quah from Kuala Lumpur, Desmond Ho from Melaka and Andrew Yeap from Kelantan.

An Environmental Law Sub-committee was also set up under the chairmanship of the new NYLC Chairman, Roger Tan. A new project loosely named the Go Green Campaign is looked into under this working group, headed by HR Dipendra.

A new Publication and Contribution working group, consisting of Richard Wee, Syamsuriatina Ishak, Melissa Tai, Tracy Hah and Noor Arianti Osman, was also formed last Friday. This working group is to assist the Malaysian Bar Webmaster to monitor and update the high-trafficked Malaysian Bar Website, to maintain its continuity and to bring in fresh ideas for its enhancement.

Emerging from the disquiet of the voiceless members of the legal fraternity concerning the conduct and the fees of Ethic Lectures, the Pupils Welfare working group was unanimously formed to look into the matter, headed by Simranjit Kaur. The pupils in chambers are those who are not yet members of the Bar by definition and they are not allowed to vote or put in motions in the Bar general meetings. The Committee feels it is important that their predicament is given an alternative route to redress, and is voiced out and channelled to the proper forum in the Bar Council.

The Committee has also been allocated a slot in the LAWASIA Conference, which is going to be held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, in October this year. The proposed topic for discussion is “Current Trend on Cross-borders Movement between Bars”. This project is headed by Richard Wee.

The ongoing projects such as YL Personality column, now headed by Audrey Quah will continue to interview and publish opinions of young and upcoming lawyers all over the country. Siri Pemikiran Kritis, now headed by Richard Wee will take on new topics and concept, to streamline and work hand-in-hand with State Bar Young Lawyers Committees. Working Conditions Survey, headed by Desmond Ho, after having published a report on working conditions of young lawyers in the previous term is now looking at conducting dialogues with employers to improve the complained working conditions.

Minda Muda Research Study: Young Malaysians on National Unity, a joined effort by the NYLC and Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS), was presented to Jabatan Perpaduan Negara & Integrasi Nasional (JPNIN) last year and was officially launched to the public on April 18, this year. The task to oversee the completion of this project is undertaken by the previous Committee Chairman, Edmund Bon.

Headed by HR Dipendra, the Committee will also continue to play a coordinating role to the State Bar Young Lawyers Committees in the planning and publicity of the Charity Nights, which is to be held simultaneously in a few states again this year.

Those are the line-ups of projects of the Committee this year, aimed at serving the targeted group defined as young lawyers and the public in general.

Suggestions are always welcome for consideration and all members of the Bar are strongly encouraged to contribute in any way you can. Please contact Chandrika Bhaskaran at 03-2031 3189 or chandrika@malaysianbar.org.my for any enquiries. The general email address of the National Young Lawyers Committee is nylc@malaysianbar.org.my.

GOOD BEGINNING NYLC!
written by Haji Sulaiman Abdullah, Monday, April 28 2008 10:12 pm

This is a very encouraging start and I am glad the new NYLC, under Roger Tan, has demonstrated the wisdom of continuing with the YLC. If this beginning is a portent of things to come then I would venture to predict that the YLC will be one of the most dynamic of the Bar Council committees, Insha'Allah.

I am glad that so many young, committed lawyers are involved in the work of the NYLC. The leadership of the Bar in years to come looks to be in safe hands!

Haji Sulaiman Abdullah
