National Young Lawyers Committee 2012/13: The Next Step
Monday, 30 July 2012 03:44pm
Contributed by the National Young Lawyers Committee, Bar Council
The Past:
The National Young Lawyers Committee (“NYLC”) 2011/12 was on a recruitment drive in 2011. Many new projects were launched and new sub-units were formed.
The structure of the NYLC in 2011/12:
1.Chairperson
2.Four Deputy Chairpersons
3.Team Leaders for Sub-Units
Amongst the major projects carried out in 2011/12:
1.4th Young Lawyers Convention
2.Part of the Logistics/Security Team of Malaysian Bar’s Walk for Freedom
3.National Survey on Working Conditions/Remunerations
4.X-Games
5.NYLC Jelajah
6.Pupils Welfare
The ongoing projects inherited from the earlier Committee are:
1.Putik Lada at the Star
2.Siri Pemikiran Kritis (“SPK”)
Collaboration with other bodies, organisations and/or committees:
1.Young Professional Alliance
2.Loyarburok
3.Professional Indemnity Insurance Committee
4.Professional Standards and Development Committee
Projects yet to be launched:
1.Pupils Welfare Video
2.National Dragon Boat Team
3.Legal Practice Unit
The Present:
The membership of NYLC has steadily increased by the month. The relevance of NYLC is evident again as young lawyers all over the country are keen to join in the activities.
However, there are some state bars with inactive Young Lawyers Committee (“YLC”) or no YLC at all. There is much to be done.
The SPK Forum has raised NYLC’s image as an intellectually-driven committee. The X-Games unit has given some balance to the committee as an external non-sports outlet.
The “Jelajah”project is well received. It’s a good opportunity for national leaders to meet state members.
There are some projects which was initiated but yet to be launched, or is in the process of being launched.
The Future, The Next Step
It is proposed that NYLC be streamlined to four major sub-units, with the following structure:
1.Chairperson
2.Deputy Chair(s) — perhaps three Deputies
3.Secretary of NYLC
4.Team Leaders
[collectively all the above will sit in NYLC Exco]
It is proposed that these units be formed:
1.The X-Games Unit
2.The Career Unit
3.The Editorial Unit
4.The Jelajah Unit
5.The Community and Civil Liberties Unit
6.The Pupils Welfare Unit
7.The External Communication Unit
Scope of work:
1.The X-Games Unit
Organise and Maintain X-Games Activities
2.The Career Unit
Continuing Professional Development
Work Condition/Remuneration
3.The Editorial Unit
Putik Lada
The Young Lawyer Journal
4.The Jelajah Unit
Organise Jelajah 2
5.The Community and Civil Liberties Unit
Organise SPK
Activism
6.The Pupils Welfare Unit
Assist and protect pupils in chambers
7.The External Communication Unit
Ministry of Youth & Sports
Liaison with other Bar Council committees
Young Professional Alliance
Liaison with external non-governmental organisations, bodies, etc
It is suggested that NYLC complete the unfinished projects of 2011 and continue similar projects of 2011/12 with some modifications and improvements. It is imperative that NYLC prepares for 2013/14, by forming and planning long-term projects which will carry on to the next term.
