National Young Lawyers Committee 2010/2011 Interim Report
Friday, 12 November 2010 01:31pm
During the 2010/2011 term, the National Young Lawyers Committee (“NYLC”) is continuing with its primary objectives of:
(1) promoting and protecting the interests of young lawyers and pupils in chambers;
(2) enhancing the continuing professional development of young lawyers and pupils in chambers for the betterment of the Malaysian Bar and society;
(3) providing a platform for interaction, and facilitating the exchange of perspectives and views, on numerous issues concerning the Bar, professional practice, the administration of justice and law reform; and
(4) maintaining and nurturing good working relationships with other Bar Council committees, various governmental agencies, non-governmental organisations and the media, in advocating for issues of concern affecting young lawyers and society in general.
NYLC is involved in the following projects:
(1) The Putik Lada Column
This fortnightly column in the Star newspaper, to highlight issues affecting lawyers and society in general, was launched on 6 June 2008 and is still going strong with articles contributed by young lawyers from various states.On 15 Oct 2010, NYLC showed their appreciation to the Putik Lada writers by hosting a dinner at Aliyaa Restaurant & Bar, Damansara Heights, in honour of their contributions.
(2) The Oral History Project
The Oral History Project is an attempt to compile the viewpoints, wisdom and experiences of lawyers around the country with a special focus on the key events in the Bar’s history. The Oral History Project will be recorded via video interviews and stored in CDs, to be made accessible to all lawyers. It is hoped that through this project, lawyers will come to appreciate the rich history of the Bar and its struggles and achievements throughout the decades.
(3) Working conditions of young lawyers
This is an ongoing project by NYLC to obtain the views of young lawyers on the challenges they face at work. Feedback is being solicited via questionnaire and the responses will be collated and presented at the 4th Young Lawyers Convention 2011.
(4) The 4th Young Lawyers Convention 2011
The 4th Young Lawyers Convention is scheduled to be held from 21 to 23 Jan 2011. The Convention aims to stir young lawyers’ interest and excitement about the future of the legal profession, as well as to inspire them to go beyond the basics of being a lawyer. The Convention will also serve as a platform to encourage the lawyers to give back to society and the nation through corporate social responsibility and environmental activism.
