RM35,000 raised at KL Charity Nite 2007

Contributed by H R Dipendra and Lee Shih

KUALA LUMPUR: Friday, 29 June 2007, marked a historic night where the Kuala Lumpur Bar Young Lawyers Committee (“KLYLC”) staged its Charity Nite 2007 and raised a record sum in excess of RM35,000 for charity. The event also saw a record attendance of 550 people packing into Maison. Another first for the young lawyers was the fact that Charity Nite was staged simultaneously in four states: Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Malacca and Johor.

All the proceeds from the night would be donated to the two adopted charities, the Sri Shenbagavali Asram Home, a home for underprivileged children and old folks, as well as the Persatuan Dialisis Touch Petaling Jaya.

After last year’s successful Charity Nite, the KL YLC once again organised the KL Bar Idol competition. Our four female finalists: Chrysh, Sue, Dayah and Ruth, took to the stage and sang their hearts out in front of an appreciative audience. The Idol finalists had been rehearsing hard for weeks with the All-Lawyer Band, consisting of Izral, Mark Ho, Greg Ling, Chua and Weina.

The lawyers started to stream in at 7.30pm, and by 8.05pm, all 100 early-bird gifts were completely snapped up. KL’s Charity Nite has seen a steady climb in attendance over the years, with 2005 seeing 300-odd lawyers attending, and last year’s count of 400-odd, and this year we broke the 500 barrier, with a total attendance of 550.

Bar Council President, Ambiga Sreenevasan, Secretary, Lim Chee Wee and Treasurer George Varughese were there to enjoy the event, along with our KL Bar Chairman, Ravindra Kumar.

The KL Bar Idol event kicked off with the Idol finalists each taking a turn to sing their first song. The band then continued to entertain the crowd with their songs during the break, along with our first guest performance by Fahri Azzat during the interlude. We then brought back our four finalists to sing their final song. Throughout this time, the special donation boxes for each finalist were carried round the entire club, in order for the audience to vote for their favourite Idol by donating into these boxes.

With a final guest performance by Ng Yoke Mui, it was then time to announce the winner of KL Bar Idol. Sue and Dayah put up truly great performances, but the “votes” placed Chrysh and Ruth into the top two positions, with Chrysh emerging as KL Bar Idol 2007! The announcement of the results was greeted with deafening screams and cheers of support, coupled with thunderous applause. Last year’s Idol, Kaushalya crowned her successor. Our KL Bar Idol then had no choice but to give in to the crowd’s demand for an encore performance of ‘Fame’. No doubt, many will remember her name.

The KLYLC wishes to thank all those who helped make Charity Nite 2007 a runaway success. The support, assistance and generous contributions from the lawyers, KLBC staff and the law firms only served to fortify the belief that the KL Bar always looks out for those in need. Thank you also to Citibank for kindly sponsoring the lucky draws as well as Hewlett Packard and Bukit Ikhlas for the generous door gifts. No doubt, their participation only served to enhance the Charity Nite goodwill.

Perak Bar Charity Nite and Perak Bar Idol 2007

Contributed by Kenny Lai Choe Ken

IPOH: After last minute hectic weeks (due to the Food and Family Day being held in the same month just 2 weeks earlier) of pushing the tickets for the inaugural event, the Perak Young Lawyers Committee is happy to state that the Perak Bar Charity Nite and Perak Bar Idol 2007 was a resounding success!

The night started slowly with many members slowly trickling in to the Ipoh City and Country Club from 7.30pm onwards as there was trouble finding parking as there was another event going on at the same place. Come 8.15pm the hall was half packed and the Organising Chairman and Emcee for the night Kenny Lai announced that the dinner was served and of course that the ladies had first option to it.

After a half hour of good food and a little drink or two, it was time for the entertainment to start i.e. The Perak Bar Idol 2007! After a short explanation on the format and the way the winner would be selected our first contestant C.S. Loong kick started the night with his rendition of the famous mandarin song “The Moon represents my heart” which drew thunderous applause from the crowd. The night had gotten off to a good start.

The second Contestant for the night was our Yang Berhormat Thomas Su who kicked off his set with his heart felt rendition of the Bryan Adams classic, “Everything I do, I do it for you” which got him a standing ovation from his bunch of supporters way at the back.

Our third and final idol contestant for the night was our only rose among the thorns Dara Waheda who thrilled us with her soft silky voice when she sang the famous Kris Dayanti song, “Menghitung Hari”. This ended the first set of songs for the contestants.

Whilst the contestants belted their hearts out, the Perak Bar’s bevy of beauties went around collecting donations for each and every contestant as the one with the most donations collected was to be declared the winner.

The emcee Kenny Lai was then “coerced” to sing for the night despite his vehement protestations on his being under the weather and having a sore throat. With a few caveats in place, he then did the classic Frank Sinatra number, “My Way” to the delight of the crowd.

Then the second round of the Idol contest ensued with C.S. Loong beginning the second set of songs with his rendition of the classic Platters song, “Smoke gets in your eyes”. Thomas Su followed up his slow number with a heart pumping Bon Jovi number, “Its My Life” which had the crowd roaring their approval. Dara Waheda closed the idol contest with a classic from our very own Malaysian Rock queen Ella’s “Standing in the eyes of the World”.

The floor was then opened to the anyone who wished to be their very own star for the night but not before the emcee Kenny taking the mic for the second time to belt out a Bad English classic “When I see you smile”.

A couple of the guests took to the mics after heavy persuasion by the emcee and the egging on of the crowd. Even then, the Perak Bar bevy of beauties continued to collect money for charity despite them NOT being in the idol contest.

Overall, the Perak Bar members had a gala of a night and despite the fun they managed to collect in excess of RM 4000.00 excluding the costs of the night. The proceeds of which would be directed to the Good Shepherd's Home in Buntong, Ipoh.

The winner by the mere sum of RM38.20 difference and the First Perak Bar Idol was C.S. Loong . The runner up was Thomas Su and finally Dara Waheda. The competition was tough but the rewards were good. It was all done in good fun and for a good cause.

The Perak Bar Young Lawyers Committee would like to extend its gratitude to the committee for its dedication and tireless work and also to the members of the Perak Bar and those in attendance that night and especially to those who contributed generously in one way or another to ensure the success of the night.

The committee would also like to place on record their thanks to their sponsors especially Carlsberg Anchor Berhad for their sponsorship of the beer and also to the Ipoh City and Country Club for the generous sponsorships of the Karaoke Machine.

Malacca Bar Idol Nite at the Melaka Charity Nite

By Pierre Lim and Desmond Ho

MALACCA:
What do the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, Everly Brothers and a Mandarin rendition of a Chinese nursery rhyme, “Father Is Not Home”, have in common? Why, nothing of course! Except that they were all sung by our very own Bar Idols and members of the Malacca Bar on the first ever Malacca Bar Idol competition in conjunction with the West Coast Charity Night jointly organized by 4 state Young Lawyers Committees.

The fund-raiser, attended by more than 110 people which was organised in Malacca together with the Liason, Charity and Welfare Sub- Committee of the Malacca Bar in aid of the Pusat Kanak-kanak Terencat Akal Bahagia witnessed a Malaccan version of the Popular TV Show American Idol, featuring our very own panel of the famous threesome, Simon Ng Kong Peng, Randy Desmond Ho and Paula Fiona Tan. It was an evening to remember as our Bar Idol hopefuls belted out tune after tune of tone-challenged popular hits much to the delight of the diners. And that’s not all folks. We had a “slave auction” in which a rather sporting member of the Malacca Bar volunteered his “Man-Friday” services for the night to the highest bidder, all in the name of good fun and charity. Our Man-Friday did not only raise funds from the auction but when his Master for the night instructed him to sing, he was paid to stop singing candidly by another Bar member.

Not only did we indulge in the trade of ‘human trafficking’ albeit a legal one, we also auctioned off lots of stuff to raise money for the children. The items that went under the hammer included paintings, much sought after cross stitched pieces by a fellow Bar member, books, a computer game, branded cosmetics bags, a baba nyonya dress in almost mint condition, ladies’ handbag, romantic novels, law books, a radio, and much more. “Auctioneer” Wong Fook Meng saw to it that the stuff sold got top dollar for what they were worth and his banter with the crowd raised a bidding war for some items.

When it came to the turn of the Malacca Bar Idol aspirants to once again test the cerebral fitness of the diners, there was much applause and laughs followed by boxes labeled with the names of Idol hopefuls making the rounds for donations. After one contestant sang Willie Nelson’s “You are always on my mind”, Simon Ng Kong Peng remarked “After that performance, you are always on my mind” bringing about much light hearted laughter. The boxes receiving the most donations won the Bar Idol contest and prize eyed was a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand for 3 days and 2 nights for two persons. After a spirited rendition of ‘Sejati’ his schoolboy days anthem backed by the band PG165, and ‘Draw Me Close’, Damian Yeo was crowned Malacca Bar’s first Idol. Shukor clinched the second spot and Yoong How Vei came in third.

The Special Children's Home is a private charity home which is not aided by the Government. It provides shelter for abandoned and disabled children. From the Charity Night, a total of about RM4,500 was collected in aid of the Special Children's Home and the organizing committee shall utilize the monies received to purchase necessities for the residents of the Home.

Johore YLC organizes first ever Charity Nite!

Contributed by Lawrence Chiong and Soo Wee Loon

JOHORE BAHRU: The Johore Charity Night organised by the Johore Young Lawyers Sub-Committee (“JYLC”) was held on 29 June 2007. The venue of the event was at a café called “June Place” in Skudai near Johore Bahru and attended by approximately 100 people. This was the first event organised by the JYLC since it was formed last year. This event was held in conjunction with 3 other states: Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Perak on the same day. The Charity Night in Johore was held in aid of the Johore Cheshire Home (“JHC”).

By about 7.30p.m., throngs of people started pouring in and the place was packed with people. Some members of the Bar also brought their families and friends along to render their support. Representatives and residents from JHC also attended the function. Even their volunteers from various countries like India, Korea and Netherlands also attended the function.

At about 8.30p.m. we went online via the Windows Live Messenger (“MSN”) with the Kuala Lumpur Charity Night Liaison Officer, Richard Wee discussing the attendance and situation in JB. Our JYLC chair, Lawrence also managed to chat online with our National Young Lawyers Committee (“NYLC”) chairman, Mr. Edmund Bon who is away in Oxford.

While this went on, guests exchanged their tickets for food and drinks. We started our first game at around 8.10p.m. Overall we had about 6 games and lucky draws in between the games as well.

We wrapped up the events for the night by giving out the Top Donor Award. For this, we invited our Johore Bar Committee Chairman, K. Mohan to hand out the award to Messrs Gulam & Wong.

The heartfelt Charity Night ended with a smile on the faces of every JHC residents and all attendees.

On a personal note, the JYLC threw a surprise party for the co-author of this report, Lawrence. 29 June is birthday too. Needless to say he was happy and thanked all at JYLC for sharing that special day with him.

CONGRATS TO ALL PARTICIPANTS
written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng, 05 July, 2007 at 04:25 am

My heartiest congratulations to all lawyers who took part in the charity fest. It can only do good to your lives.

I am saddened that Penang has been excluded in the whole exercise because we in Penang do not have a Young Lawyers' Committee.

So far, no one from the Penang Bar Committee from the chairperson down has chosen to explain why Penang has chosen not to have such a committee when most other States have them. Why the initial and continued silence?

United we stand, Divided we fall
written by Dipendra A/L Harshad Rai, 05 July, 2007 at 12:45 pm

The Coming together of 4 state bars for a charitable cause only augurs well for the Bar as a whole. We have demonstrated the compassionate and charitable side to us all and yet at the same time created an excellent atmosphere for us lawyers to have fun.

Despite the event being largely organised by young lawyers, the successful charity nites would not have been possible but for the continued support and spurring on by the senior members. I am heatened by this and for that one night I saw all lawyers irrespective of any belief, religion and persuasion gather, mingle and support in the name of charity.

This should give us all hope to carry on for the future.

Historical Night
written by Richard Wee Thiam Seng, 05 July, 2007 at 12:54 pm

The West Coast Charity Nite was an awesome project. It was a tiring effort and took up much of the time, of the organisers.

But it was worth it to see so much money collected for the charitable organisations. The contributions will help better the lives of many people.

It was a historical night, as never before has state YLC joined forces to carry out this massive social and welfare project. I think this fact has not sunk in yet, amongst the Young Lawyers who organised the West Coast Charity Nite.

In summary, the collections were:-
1. Perak - RM4,000
2. KL - RM35,000
3. Melaka - RM4,500
4. Johore - estimated to be around RM3,000 to RM6,000

Total attendance for ALL Charity Nites almost touched 1000 people. So for ONE special night, almost 1000 lawyers took time off to relax and raise funds for Charity.

June 29th 2007, will go down in history as the night the Bar saw the BIGGEST Fund Raising party ever. We all should be proud of this. smilies/smiley.gif

Well done to all!
written by Lee Shih, 05 July, 2007 at 02:31 pm

It was a privilege to play some small part in the West Coast Charity Nite '07. Well done to all the respective state YLCs, and thank you to the entire Bar for supporting the whole event.

It was an absolute blast organising the KL Charity Nite, and it is heart-warming to see the record amount raised for the charities.

Here is to many more years of successful Charity Nites, all cross the country!

Well Done NYLC and the State YLCs!
written by Kenny Lai Choe Ken, 05 July, 2007 at 03:00 pm

Well done to the 4 states who organised and collected for the various charities. Though the sums may be small for some states, nevertheless it is heartening that young lawyers have taken time out of their busy schedules and helped organise such a big affair.

A very big thanks to those who donated their time and money in making the West Coast Charity Nite 2007 a success!

This augurs well for the future of the Bar! Lets hope that this will only be the first of many more interesting and good projects in the future.

We MUST be proud of this event!! A big round of applause and a standing ovation to the organisers and their sponsors for this event!

A Smashing Nite!!!
written by Vincent Tey Wei Seng, 05 July, 2007 at 07:30 pm

To just thank everyone who has participated in the West Coast Charity Nite, especially those in Kuala Lumpur, is wholly inappropriate. You all deserve nothing less than a big cheer!!!

An acquaintance suggested holding next year's event on a field! Well, this is just the beginning of more great things to come.. it might just happen one day. Well done everyone!!

We did it!
written by Sheryl Tan Sheik Ching, 05 July, 2007 at 09:04 pm

I feel very proud to be a part of the committee helping out during the Charity Night itself. Even though at the end of the night I feel exhausted due to walking around with one of the contestant's donation box to get donation, I was touched by our peer that has donated so much into the boxes. I think we should all be very proud of ourselves having done something meaningful for this society! I personally think that charity Night should be held every year and I hope that I would always be a part of it! smilies/smiley.gif

Charity morning after?
written by Sunil Lopez a/l Ceasar Lopez, 06 July, 2007 at 05:39 pm

I'm sure the proceeds from the event will put a much needed smile on the faces of the underprivileged. It was undoubtedly a great night of fun and I have vague memories of lawyers dancing like they were in a music video. Perhaps charity night should be followed by a morning of recovery at some designated dim sum or thosai place. Can ah?

A Night To Remember
written by Benjamin Sathyanandam, 07 July, 2007 at 02:21 pm

Kudos to all participating states coming together as one, planning and executing the West Coast Charity Nite successfully. I'm proud of the Bar and the young lawyers for doing such an excellent job. Hopefully we could have more states participating in next year's event, if at all there's one. Is there?? He! He! Just curious...

To those working behind the scenes... especially the Committee, a job well done.

Back Up performence from the Band
written by Richard Wee Thiam Seng, 13 July, 2007 at 12:12 pm

I must also congratulate the Band which backed up the KL Bar Idol finalists. As usual, they performed very well.

Mark Ho and his boys have definitely led the way. The same band have tirelessly supported the Charity Nite event since the 1st one in 2005. The recent back up performance makes it a 3-in-a-row show. They have performed at virtually no costs except some disbursement. It is also very possible that the All-Lawyers Band will continue to support the future Charity Nites without charging any fees.

Bravo to them and all applause to our very own Band!!
