Young Lawyers Committee of the KL Bar met with KDU law
students at its Petaling Jaya campus last weekend. The exercise was part of the
Committee’s plan to instill an awareness in KDU’s budding lawyers on the
realities of law practice in Malaysia.
The Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee, H.R Dipendra, opened the day’s event
by addressing the law students in the college’s moot court. He explained that
many law graduates have different expectations on law practice and many are
disappointed and quit after three years.
“It is a question of managing expectations of our young lawyers. To me, it is
vital these young lawyers are given as much information as possible so that they
can make informed decisions. When you are better informed, you can make
decisions,” explained Dipendra who has been practising law for seven years.
The Committee that began this awareness programme in 2005, first reached out to
law students in local universities and is now making their rounds in private
colleges.
The KDU law students were divided into smaller groups, and each was given as
opportunity to speak on various topics of concerns.
Almost all expressed concern about the salary of a chambering student which is
not enough with the rising costs of living in the Klang Valley.
The students also learn about corporate law, and the importance of arbitration
as an alternative to the common method of dispute resolution. An important
lesson for all law students is to never go into court unprepared.
Many shared the opinion that law is not a boring subject. Granted, it requires
intense reading and preparation but it also brings out the passion and interest
in law. The students acknowledged that law school is also about moulding law
students into fine lawyers so that they may contribute well to society when they
begin their work.
The Chair of the Pupil’s Welfare Committee, Richard Wee, a lawyer with nine
year’s experience says that the three years spent in law school is only a way to
nurture a legal mind. A lawyer needs to know how to argue a case and think on
the spot when asked a question.
“It is about the acquisition of knowledge. Law students will quickly realize
that the legal profession is not a sprint but a marathon. The acquisition of
knowledge will be your stamina – the more you know, the farther will go”.
Aishath Lua from Maldives found the exercise to be informative. “For me, I got
and ideas as to how the legal profession and working life truly are. They told
us it is not easy at first but with hard work, it can be as good as you imagine
it to be,” exclaimed the third year student under the KDU-University of Tasmania
LLB Twinning Programme.
Another student, Eva Ewe found the experience enriching. “It taught me that
through perseverance and hard work, the efforts put in would bring fruitful
results”.
Dipendra was proud that the students were responsive especially when he stressed
on the need to have integrity and honesty when practising law.
