KUALA LUMPUR: The Legal Aid Centre across Peninsular Malaysia has embarked on a Legal Aid
Awareness Programme among the public. This includes the Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid
Centre (KL-LAC) which, for example, has initiated projects and campaigns to
ensure the public becomes aware what KL LAC can offer to the public.
Pursuant to this, the KL Bar’s Young Lawyers Committee (KLBar- YLC) also took
part in the awareness campaign by forming its own project. Aptly called the “AID
LEGAL AID MONTH”, the campaign is a recruitment drive to encourage more lawyers
to take up legal aid files. The campaign was recently launched at Bau Bau Café
at Central Market.
Chairman for the KLBar- YLC, H R Dipendra and the chair of its Human Rights and
Legal Struggles unit Sunil Lopez stated that the KLBar-YLC has come out with a
White Badge for lawyers to wear on our shirts or jackets. The badge unmistakably
has the ‘Aid Legal Aid’ phrase emblazoned on it and they are in the process of
distributing the same to the lawyers free.
It was also good to know that the administration of the Kuala Lumpur Court
Complex has given dispensation for lawyers to wear the badges on the jackets
throughout the month of September until the 7th 0f October 2007. Already some
young lawyers were seen proudly wearing the white badge all over Court.
However, the badge aside, the KLBar YLC hopes to strongly encourage younger
lawyers particularly, to take up legal aid files. The LAC has brilliantly
initiated noble legal aid programmes to help the unfortunate section of society,
but all these programmes wont take off without lawyers to help represent these
legal aid ‘clients’.
Dipendra has mentioned that the aim is that “One Lawyer Should Take Up One File
Per Year”. With over 6000 members in KL, up to 6000 files legal aid files can be
cleared, every year.
The KL LAC is at Level 6 Wisma Kraftangan, Jalan Tun Perak, Kuala Lumpur. The
contact no. is : 03 2691 3005, where you may ask for Stephanie or Elizabeth.
