The National Law Awareness Week (NLAW) was launched in a simple yet meaningful ceremony by the Chief Minister of Kedah, YAB Dato’ Seri Ustaz Hj Azizan Abdul Razak on Saturday, 24 October 2009 at Village Mall, Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Kedah was chosen as the launching venue for this year’s NLAW to show appreciation to the Kedah State Government for the financial assistance provided to the Kedah/Perlis Legal Aid Centre these two years. The NLAC encourages and welcomes similar progressive gestures from other state governments.

Increasing access to justice to the public should be an important priority of all state governments.

The week has been filled with law awareness programs organised by different Bar Council State Legal Aid Centres throughout the Peninsular. This includes a talk and pamphlet distribution at Dewan Holy Spirit in Penang (25 October), a talk co-organised with the Persatuan Kebajikan Masyarakat India at Sungai Siput, Perak (26 October), a law awareness program at Kampong Batu 14, Cameron Highlands, Perak (27 October), seminar at Sekolah Menengah Gual Ipoh, Tanah Merah, Kelantan (28 October), a legal aid clinic at Mahkamah Majistret Rompin, Pahang (29 October) and a legal aid clinic at Felda Chalok Barat, Setiu, Terengganu (30 October).

The week-long program will conclude tomorrow, Saturday, 31 October 2009 at the main entrance of the Central Market, Kuala Lumpur. Entertainment will include skits, comedy, dikir barat and poetry reading. The program will begin from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and everyone is invited to attend.

The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) will open its information booth at the same location from 3pm on Saturday, 31 October 2009. Everyone seeking legal advice is invited to visit the booth.
