KUALA LUMPUR: A simplified version of the Federal Constitution should be printed in booklets and distributed to schools to enable the younger generation to know their rights, the Bar Council has suggested.

Its National Legal Aid Committee chairman Cecil Rajendra said about 90% of youths were unaware of their constitutional rights.

He said the booklets should be distributed to primary schools.

“I think it is absolutely essential that people know their constitutional rights, especially youths who are easily influenced,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said that in conjunction with the country's 50th anniversary celebrations, the committee would organise a week-long National Legal Awareness Week, with the theme “Rights of the Next Generation”, from Sept 1 to 9.

He said centres in each state would have their own activities, with most of the states inviting bands to lure the target group to participate in the events.

Lawyer Latheefa Koya said that in housing areas where there were no proper local plans and structures, youths living there had no avenue to turn to, and tended to hang out in groups.

She said policemen would then come around and ask them what were they doing, asking for identification cards and so on.

“This is when the anger builds up, because they have done nothing and yet have to go through this form of harassment,” she said.
