George VarugheseWhen the march was first mooted, I did not expect the numbers that turned up at the entrance of the Palace of Justice yesterday.

Initially whilst travelling on the bus, we were stopped at the entry point to Precinct 1. Although we tried negotiating with the police to allow the buses to go through, the police sergeant was adamant that his instructions from the Ketua Polis was to stop our buses from entering Putrajaya.

However that did not deter those aboard the bus, who immediately disembarked and proceeded to walk to the Palace of Justice (POJ), a good 6 kilometres away.

Many members of Bar also immediately responded to the call to ferry the lawyers who were walking, to bring them from Precinct 1 in their cars to the POJ.

The convoy from Malacca Bar consisting of a van and three cars faced similar problems, but managed to find alternative routes to get to the POJ.

It was heartwarming to see members of the Bar, young and old, from Alor Setar right right down to Johor Bahru finding their way to the POJ despite the attempts by the authorities to stop them from getting there.

Although the march was delayed, the solidarity and conviction of the lawyers who did the march was indeed admirable.

The weather was fine till we reached the Prime Minister’s department. Little did we know that it was pouring outside while we were inside the PM’s department handing over the memoranda.

It was indeed overwhelming to be greeted by the members of Bar who were by then soaked to their skin when we returned to the Aataran, which only proves that lawyers would withstand any weather for the fight for justice.

A very big thank you to all the younger members of the Bar and the staff of the Bar Council Secretariat who worked tirelessly since last Saturday in organising this successfully peaceful march.

A huge thank you also goes out to all of YOU who attended this historic march and I am indeed proud to be one of you as a member of the Malaysian Bar.

Proud of the spirit of camaraderie

I am equally proud of the turn out and the spirit of camaraderie shown on that precise moment in history. Bar council and its participating members have done the legal fraternity proud: the walk the talk done peacefully but firmly.

A proud participant of Walk for Justice,
