He wants to share his passion for mediation PDF Print E-mail

By George Lim Teong

Mr Lim is passionate about mediation and he wants lawyers to explore this avenue.

The former Law Society president successfully mediated a number of cases with claims of between $10 million and $12 million last year. Even better are the overall numbers: a 75 per cent success rate with 90 per cent of cases resolved within a day at the Singapore Mediation Centre that he helped set up in 1997.

'There is a lot of satisfaction in having successfully mediated a case,' said the 53-year-old, who was called to the Bar in 1982. Now a partner at Wee Tay & Lim, Mr Lim also helped to set up the Law Society's Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, and its law awareness and advocacy programmes.

Married to a housewife, the father of two grown sons put himself through law school at the National University of Singapore by giving tuition.

'NUS gives a sound foundation and you get to meet fellow future lawyers. It's much easier to settle a case when you know the lawyers from the other side,' said the former vice- president of the Singapore Academy of Law.

Since then, the trial lawyer has fought cases in the High Court and Court of Appeal. He has also helped to train lawyers, judges and professionals in mediation for the Thai judiciary, the Bar Council of Malaysia and Fiji's Ministry of Labour, among others.

A year ago, he was appointed chairman of the Asian Mediation Association. On his newly-minted status as Senior Counsel, he said: 'I hope to be a good example, to encourage more people to see law as a service to society.'
