Boeing Co. Machinists in Hazelwood postponed plans to walk out on June 23 after rejecting a labor contract, saying they have agreed to federal mediation later this week.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers will accept a Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service proposal to meet on Friday, according to an e-mailed statement from the union. The IAM said the request came just an hour before it had intended to deliver formal notification of strike plans to Chicago-based Boeing.

The mediation start initially was set for June 23 and was moved up "to resolve the issues without a work stoppage if possible at the earliest possible moment," the union said.

A strike by the IAM's 2,533 members would halt production of F-15 and F-18 jets. The walkout would be the second in two months for Boeing's defense operations, after a monthlong work stoppage by workers who build C-17 military transport jets in Long Beach, Calif. The C-17 employees began returning to the factory on June 10.

"We certainly want to take every effort to avert a work stoppage, and we view this as an opportunity to clarify our best and final offer," Boeing spokesman Paul Guse said.

The Hazelwood Machinists, who rejected an offer on June 13, object to Boeing's plan to switch new hires to a different retirement program. That was also a point of contention for Machinists at Boeing's commercial-airplane hub in Seattle during a two-month strike in 2008.
