Lawyers' march: Speaking for our fundamental rights PDF Print E-mail

by Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, Kuala Lumpur

I REFER to the report, "People don't seem to care, says lawyer" (NST, Nov 1), where I am quoted as saying that "... almost 2,000 lawyers marching is a threat to national security but people don't seem to worry about that. Even the bench does not seem worried".

The statement attributed to me does not properly reflect what I said in my speech. My speech addressed the question of what the Federal Constitution meant to me after 50 years of independence.

In my speech, I conveyed my concern that in our country, important things like the independence of the judiciary, rule of law, separation of powers, freedom of assembly and other rights have been ignored. The people should be concerned about these issues but somehow, they don't seem to care enough.

I cited the example that some people in power regarded the peaceful march by 2,000 lawyers as a threat to national security to highlight my point that they have little regard for the fundamental right of assembly enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

As to my statement that some members of the bench do not seem to care about the Constitution, I was referring to their reluctance to defend the Constitution when interpreting the Constitution in cases that come before them.
