PETALING JAYA: A law conference organised by the
Malaysian Bar in October will discuss how Malaysia’s laws have developed since
Merdeka and the way forward in the next 50 years. (Please

The 14th Malaysian Law Conference, with the theme “50 Years
of Merdeka”, will be held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Oct 29 to 31.
The Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, who is also a former
lord president, will officiate at the conference and deliver the opening
address, titled 50 Years of Constitutionalism and the Rule of Law.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will present
the keynote address, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri
Nazri Aziz, who is in charge of the law portfolio, will close the conference.
Among the topics to be discussed are constitutional law,
trade and globalisation, Islamic commercial law, local government, housing and
land laws and intellectual property law.
The other topics include the protection of heritage, orang
asli and the constitution, freedom of arts, freedom of information, and new
developments in corporate law.
“The topics are aimed at examining the development of our
laws after 50 years of independence as well as reflecting on Malaysia’s
achievements, raising present issues and challenges, and generating discussions
for the way forward in the next 50 years,” the Malaysian Bar said.
