Sunday Star (Used by permission) KUALA LUMPUR: The Bar Council's biennial Malaysian Law Conference has struck two firsts: a ruler who is a former head of the judiciary himself, and the head of government will attend the conference tomorrow. While Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah will open the conference and give a short speech, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will deliver the keynote address. The three-day conference at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre themed 50 Years of Merdeka will focus largely on the Federal Constitution. A number of sessions have been planned discussing fundamental liberties such as freedom of religion, freedom of information, freedom of expression in the arts, and protecting orang asli customs and cultural rights. The only session where all the panellists are non-lawyers is the one on freedom of expression in the arts, where the speakers are Ramli Ibrahim (founder of Sutra Dance Theatre), Joseph Gonzalez (head of dance department Aswara), Amir Muhammad (independent film-maker) and Eddin Khoo (founder and director of Pusaka Foundation). Apart from the usual plenary sessions on issues concerning the constitution, the organising committee has also included a a coffee-table talk on the Constitution, What the Constitution means to me, where participants will get to hear from Sarawak Attorney-General Datuk J.C. Fong and lawyers Raja Aziz Addruse, Sulaiman Abdullah, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, Edmund Bon and Nizam Bashir. While some participants will examine The Role of Asean in Myanmar Impasse, others will look at the rising social problem from asylum seekers and migrant labour – The Invisible Communities – here at a concurrent session. Two sessions, Dealing with Electronic Evidence and The Impact of the Law on Technology and Technology on the Law, should alsoprove interesting.
