Number of Members present: 704

Motion 1:

To receive representation from Antah Sedgwick on the proposed professional indemnity scheme and if thought fit to adopt the scheme so that appropriate amendments could be made to bring it into force.

Resolution:

It was decided by majority vote that the scheme be adopted.

Follow-up Action:

A letter was sent to the Minister for Law enclosing a copy of the proposed amendment to the Legal Profession Act together with an explanatory note impressing upon him the need to expedite the gazetting of the amendment in the interest of the public and that of the profession.

Motion 2:

To resolve that the Building Fund be retained by the Bar Council for the purchase of No. 3, Jalan Tun Perak, Kuala Lumpur

Resolution:

It was decided by 2/3rd majority vote to adopt the Motion to centralise the fund again for the purchase of the Building.

Follow-up Action:

On 7th April 1990, the Bar Council entered into an Agreement for the purchase of the property at $1 million and entered into negotiations with Kong Ming Bank with a view to coming up with some joint development for the entire 4 lots belonging to the Bar Council and the Bank. The Council decided to sell both the properties in Subang Jaya and Wisma Central to meet part of the expenses. In May, the Wisma Central property was sold for $158,000.00 and in the following month, the Subang Jaya property was sold for $500,000.00. After the development, the new building is to house-

(a) The Bar Council officer;
(b) The Selangor and Federal Territory Bar Committee offices;
(c) The Legal Aid Centre;
(d) The library; and
(e) One floor reserved for meeting rooms.

Motion 3:

Use of Standard Chartered Bank VISA Affinity Card

Proposer: Mr S. Sivasubramaniam
Seconder: Mr A. Panjaram

Resolution:

It was decided by majority vote to reject the Motion.
