SUHAKAM to conduct a public inquiry on the arrests of 5 KLLAC lawyers

At its monthly meeting on 13 July 2009, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) decided to hold a Public Inquiry on the arrests of five lawyers from the KL Legal Aid Centre. The five were arrested outside the Brickfields Police Station on the evening of 7 May 2009.
In a press statement issued by the Vice-Chairman of Suhakam, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Simon Sipaun on 13 July 2009, Suhakam stated that the Public Inquiry would determine whether or not the arrest of the 5 lawyers contravened the provisions of the Federal Constitution.
A three-member Panel has been appointed to conduct the inquiry, they are: Commissioner Dato' Muhammad Shafee Abdullah (Chairperson), Dato' Dr Michael Yeoh and Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria.
