April 4:
IT was with great disappointment that we consumers came to know about the recent increase in legal fees to 1.5 per cent for a housing sale transaction.

The legal fraternity increased the consumer’s burden without much justification or publication of information.

There was no public debate or knowledge of this increase and house buyers got to know about the additional cost from their lawyers.

Can we appeal against the increase? No, the lawyer told me. We, the consumers, have to bear the extra cost.

Is this new ruling determined by the high-powered legal community, especially when it seems to benefit the lawyers?

Is there any agency for the consumer to appeal against this?

The increase in legal fees is more disheartening as the sale and purchase agreement is typically done with the standard legal terms and conditions.

It is the purchaser or seller who bears the risks.

How can consumers’ associations, the housing tribunal or the housing industry help the consumer in this situation?

How can we get the legal fraternity to be transparent and accountable in justifying the increase in legal fees?

:upset I think only legal profession, the public dare to mention abt discount or complain abt the increase, other profession....if the practitioner present the bill, the public dare not to say anything..and always there is a presumption that what they are charging is justified.. but once lawyers present the bill....they started thinking that we are dishonest., bloodsucking....blah..blah.. The truth is legal profession is an honourable and dignified profession... only couple of black sheep...that's normallahhhhh.
