KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Zaid Ibrahim is suing a blogger and two others for a total of RM30mil over alleged defamatory words published in a bi-monthly newspaper last month.
Zaid, who is Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita) president, has named writer cum blogger Mohd Sayuti Omar, bi-monthly newspaper Buletin Rakyat editor Norzah Kepol and its publisher Kantung Network Sdn Bhd as defendants.
In his lawsuit, Zaid claimed that Buletin Rakyat had in its Nov 1 issue published an article entitled Zaid Terus Hanyut Dalam Keegoannya (Zaid continues to be drowned in his ego), which was libellous.
He said the words had implied that he was egoistic and had used his wealth as well as his qualifications as a lawyer to force people to “bow to him”.
In his statement of claim filed on Nov 21, Zaid said the words also meant that he was not matured in politics.
Besides the general damages of RM10mil from each defendant and other costs, he is seeking an injunction to stop them from further defaming him by publishing similar words.
Zaid also wants the defendants to publish an apology continuously in the newspaper for two months or an appropriate period considered by the court as well as a withdrawal of the publication on terms agreed by him.
Yesterday, High Court judge Justice Zabariah Mohd Yusof set Dec 14 to know if Mohd Sayuti would appoint a lawyer to defend his case or settle the matter.
Speaking to reporters later, Zaid’s lawyer Nizam Bashir Abdul Kariem Bashir said the judge was supposed to hear the injunction but Mohd Sayuti was unrepresented.
Nizam said copies of the claim and the injunction application had been served on Mohd Sayuti on Nov 30.
