PETALING JAYA: The Barisan Nasional government is determined to keep the country's peace and stability through teamwork among the races, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In assuring the Chinese community of this, he said this included sharing of political power and cooperation in the economic field.

“The Government is responsive and attentive to the welfare and happiness of its citizens and is always ready to hear views from them, regardless of their race or religion,” he said at the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia's (Hua Zong) 20th anniversary dinner and central committee oath-taking ceremony last night.

“I believe the Chinese are a very rational race and they always want a stable and harmonious country so that they can carry on with their lives and businesses in a peaceful environment,” he said.

He pointed out that many views from the Chinese related to economy, social, welfare and education had been accepted and implemented by the Government.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the ministry was looking into providing Mandarin teachers in national schools for students interested in the subject.

He hoped Hua Zong, which wielded significant influence over the Chinese, would play its role as a bridge between the Government and the community.

Muhyiddin also congratulated Hua Zong president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah for the federation's initiative in establishing close ties with the Government through meetings and dialogues.

Pheng urged the Government to approve the construction of Chinese private secondary schools in Kuantan, Pahang and Segamat, Johor, as well as recognise the Unified Examination Certificate.
